BEHIND THE FICTION: KATE WINSLET

Kate Winslet is the focus on this week's edition of BEHIND THE SPOTLIGHT. After thrilling movie fans with her amazing performance in last friday's theatre-debuting movie, The Mountain between us, its time to get up-close and personal with her behind the fiction of Hollywood.

Kate Elizabeth Winslet is British, from England and a proud recipient of the Commander of The British Empire(CBE) honour. Born 5th october 1975 in Reading, England to parents Roger John Winslet(a swimming pool contractor) and Sally Anne(a barmaid). She has three siblings.

Kate studied drama and began her career in british television in 1991, but it was on the scene of the smash-hit movie, Titanic, where she starred with eternal friend Leonardo DiCapro, that she achieved global stardom. She has gone on to star successfully in movies such as Iris(2001)Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind (2004), Finding Neverland(2004), Little Children(2006), Revolutionary road(2008), The Dressmaker(2015) and Steve Jobs(2015) - all to critical acclaim.

In her latest movie,The Mountain Between Us, which sees her act in sub-zero temperatures, you would have been forgiven for thinking she would oppose the idea of a freezing cold weather. Well, guess what, she rode the challenge as she excitedly submerged herself into a frozen lake several times. She credits her role in Titanic and her upbringing with giving her the strength of mind and courage to embrace challenging situations. "Its hard to discern because I speak very nicely and look , hopefully, pulled together, but there was no money in my family when I grew up." She said, "So there's a certain level of survival skills you just learn in terms of finding happiness......and along the way, we learned a huge amount about, not necessarily survival but relying on one's own emotional resources to cope with certain situations in life. So what i actually think that did for us on the mountain was give us a sense of humour and determination. That's what i feel we needed more than anything else."

Despite admitting to having a good bond with the small cast and crew members on set and loving the general movie-shooting process, she also reveals it got tough and wasn't easy in anyway. In her words, "much of what we had imagined we would do naturally, changed because of our circumstances, making sure we weren't in any way damaging the integrity of the story based on how tricky these circumstances were..was the hardest part. Just fucking remembering to act with all of those things stacked against us. I think Idris would say the same thing....We weren't ready for how hard those elements were going to be to actually work in..."

Kate is an Oscar Award, the highest movie honour, winner. she emerged best actress for her role in The Reader(2008), while her greatest commercial success in movies have come in Titanic(1997) , the romantic comedy The Holiday(2006), the animated film Flushed Away(2006) and the first two films of  The Divergent series. As of August 2017, Winslet's films have grossed over $4 billion dollars worldwide.

Kate is a happily married wife to Ned Rocknroll and is a mother to three kids.
